October 29th is World Psoriasis Day, an opportunity to shed light on a condition that affects millions worldwide.
Did you know that over 125 million people globally are living with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA)? In Canada, approximately 1 million individuals are affected. Despite this significant prevalence, many still misunderstand psoriasis, leading to delays in getting the right care.
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that speeds up the growth cycle of skin cells, leading to thick, red, scaly patches on the surface of the skin. These can appear on the elbows, knees, scalp, or anywhere on the body, causing discomfort, itching, and pain. It’s important to know that psoriasis can be linked to other health issues like diabetes, heart disease, and depression.
Common symptoms include:
- Itching, burning, or painful skin
- Silvery, scaly plaques
- Dry skin that may crack or bleed
It is more than just a “skin” disease.
It can significantly impact the quality of life for both patients and caregivers. According to a 2022 survey by the Canadian Psoriasis Network, many people with psoriasis share common experiences that highlight the broader effects of the disease. In fact, 63% of participants reported a worse quality of life due to psoriasis. Major impacts include decreased self-confidence, insomnia, difficulties in social and romantic life, and even changes in clothing choices. Most participants just want relief from discomfort, pain, and anxiety. While there is no cure for psoriasis, various treatments such as topical creams and medications can help ease symptoms.
The survey also revealed that 31% had a hard time getting a diagnosis. Many experienced delays, incorrect diagnoses, and long waits to see a specialist.
